This blog post has been one that we’ve wanted to write for a while. I guess it’s fitting on a day where hearts are flying around everywhere to share the Heart behind our little business and why we’re ALL the way In!
Our love for photography began by chasing after God’s dreams for our lives. When I was in college I thought I wanted to be a broadcast journalist. I was Media Arts & Design, a post digital production concentration with a double in Theatre and a minor in Rhetorical tradition. Sometime before graduation, I knew I wanted something a little different… a lot different! I wouldn’t chase after a career as a broadcast journalist but rather a much much different career. One behind the camera instead of in front of it, a career “out there” following after God’s wild plan for my future.
In the years before we began Blush Wood, I could be found running around South Asia and the Arab Gulf. I lived most of my single years outside of the States, living among a variety of cultures and people, growing as a documentary photographer and videographer, taking risks and constantly learning. It was crazy. It was beautiful. It was the lifestyle of my prayers and dreams. For those years, God provided everything I needed and while I wasn’t busy building a business for myself or pursuing the American dream, I cannot imagine spending that time any differently. Yes, it had it’s share of challenges, but it was worth it. I knew that one day, probably not until I was married, I’d come back and the business I always dreamt of and prayed about would finally happen!! … and it did.
For everyone it’s different. Maybe for some it’s about money.. or for some it’s about becoming “Instagram-famous!” There are so many different motives for everyone out there!
God’s timing for everything in Michael and I’s life and in the life of Blush Wood has been perfect. He knew that this journey was one that would be better for me with Michael toiling right alongside me. He knew for Michael, pursuing his dreams as an artist (photographer/filmmaker) would also be better with me toiling right alongside him too. Michael, much like me has loved photography since … forever. I used to pray HARD for an “artistic and creative husband!” Got him!!! That God blessed us both with one another still blows our minds!!! For both of us, it is the sweetest gift that we now get to do these things together!! Our bucket list for Blush Wood Studios is huge!
Photography has imprinted on our hearts experiences, people and places that would otherwise be impossible to describe. Through the art we love so much we are able to story tell, to create, be creative and to share love. Best of all photography continues to give us the opportunity to bless people… a passion that we pray runs through every stage of our lives and of our business.
Yes, we will be those people shooting Weddings and Engagements all over the world. We’re Dreaming BIG! Believing for much Bigger! 🙂 Yes, we fully intend on being that couple traveling around north India, etc, etc… with a beautiful baby strapped on our back and cameras in our hands. (We don’t have kids…yet! But yep, that’ll be us!) Yes, we will be those people who use our talents to Bless people and share love everywhere we go. YES, crazy we may sound but we believe it with all of our hearts!
The best things in our lives have never come without serious hustle… and for this little business have we ever hustled!
There is very rarely a day that we don’t pick up our cameras. There is also very rarely a day when we’re not discussing between the two of us where we want to shoot, goals we have technically, things we want to learn and creative dreams for the future of Blush Wood! There is never a day when there is nothing to edit. We’re obsessed…in a healthy, passionate entrepreneur-kind- of- way!
It’s the kind of passion that makes us deliberate, intentional and also very very patient! “Great things are coming”….!!!
So why Blush Wood?
Capturing Weddings, Elopements and Engagements for couples who like us are enamored by romance, beauty, the outdoors, great storytelling and adventure is part of the heart behind Blush Wood. It is for us the opportunity to live our passion and the kind of artistic and free lifestyle that together we have dreamed of and trust God for. So much more is ahead of us!!
We love marriage. We love being married. We love celebrating marriage. There isn’t a day more special between a couple than the day they become one and two families are also joined together in love. It is incredibly special capturing that. Sharing in the joy with our couples on their Wedding days is something we truly look forward to.
When you love something passionately you study it, you do it constantly, you live it, you dream it and you surround yourself with it. This is our heart…
“You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off of you.”
– Maya Angelou
Maintaining a business is not easy. We’ve truly never worked harder in our lives! Late nights and early mornings… but knowing that we’re working towards our dream, it’s worth it all! Our prayer and our hope for this season and in everything we do is that we continue to grow and to flourish! I’m glad we fell in love with the art first and from it countless opportunities have opened up for us. Now, we have a business we adore and we get to do what we enjoy, what we’re good at and do that with couples we love! The best is yet to come…
Whatever your dreams are, however crazy they sound, we hope you also go for them with everything you’ve got! And if you want to go on an adventure… call us! We’ll be ready!

Becky & Brad’s Williamsburg Wedding is on our Blog and we’re thrilled to finally share it! Our 2018 Wedding season began this month (January) however we have a ton of 2017 to keep sharing! Fall Weddings are the busiest time of the year for us and also our favorite time of the year. We love them and we look forward to another full fall Wedding season this year! Becky and Brad’s Wedding was a blend of traditional heirloom elegance with, modern DIY elements, luxurious cascading florals and artistic touches which put a golden seal on the day. It was storybook beautiful and uniquely theirs. Our photographer hearts were happy from beginning to the end. It was incredible spending the day working to create the Wedding album they dreamed of! Team work, awesome vendors and a really good plan made the day absolutely perfect. It just so happened on their Wedding day, the sun was perfectly diffused allowing us to shoot where it would normally be too overcast to create soft and romantic portraits! Ford’s Colony in the fall is a magical place to have a Wedding and we can’t wait until we get to shoot there again …
How sweet are these friends?! They were just so Awesome!
How beautiful are they!? And that view!
Thank you to a wonderful vendor team who helped make Brad & Becky’s Wedding day so perfect!!

Norfolk Botanical Gardens is one of our favorites for sure and holds a pretty special place for us because it is where we ourselves got engaged… (in the Renaissance Court to be exact)!! The gardens are gorgeous year round and we couldn’t wait for Brooke and Kaleb’s Wedding in the Butterfly Garden. We might be a little biased but we think the Butterfly Garden for a Wedding ceremony is one of the most special spots in the gardens. Tucked back into it’s own gorgeous little cove surrounded with trees and lush greenery draping the garden gazebo, if you linger at the perfect time which just so happened to be during their ceremony, the light is at it’s most ideal and peeks through the trees making for the most beautiful garden Wedding portraits during the Ceremony! From the sweetest Father daughter “first look” to their party on the patio into the night, we had so much fun capturing Brooke & Kaleb’s incredible day! I’m sure you can agree the flowers were perfect.. if only you could have tasted their cake and have felt the energy on the dance floor!! As usual we worked with an incredible vendor team.
